What are the different types of solar inverters available?

Different types of solar power systems use different types of inverters and the inverters function differently as per the needs of the system. The solar inverter is the heart of a solar power system and determines how the solar power at any instant is utilized.

In case of grid-tied solar power systems, the solar inverter (also known as a grid-tied solar inverter) converts DC power coming from solar panels into AC power. In case of a gross-metering arrangement, the solar inverter then exports this AC power entirely to the grid. In case of a net metering arrangement, the solar inverter feeds the AC power to any AC loads running at that instant, while synchronizing any excess solar power with the grid frequency so that it can safely be exported to the grid. In case of hybrid solar power systems, the solar inverter (also known as a hybrid solar inverter) uses DC power coming from solar panels to either charge a battery, or, feed it directly to DC loads (if such a provision is available), or, convert it to AC power to feed the AC loads,and in case of bi-directional inverters, also, export excess AC power to the grid. Since a hybrid solar power system, also uses grid power as a back-up source, the hybrid solar inverter determines when and how much AC power is to be drawn from the grid and what it is to be utilized for, i.e. to either charge the battery, or, to be supplied to the loads. In case of off-grid solar power systems, the solar inverter (also known as off-grid solar inverter) uses DC power coming from solar panels to either charge a battery, or, feed it directly to DC loads (if such a provision is available), or, convert it to AC power to feed the AC loads. Since, off-grid solar power systems are standalone systems the solar inverter does not draw any power from the grid.
